Cam Newton: Entertainer, Icon, Future Bust

Cam Newton came out and said he saw himself as an "entertainer" and "icon" already. The guy hasn't thrown one NFL pass, and struggled mightily in his combine workout, yet he's already got big plans as an star NFL QB. If my team was looking at drafting him in the NFL Draft, I would hope and pray everyday that they don't. We see this type of QB come around plenty: big QB, big arm, and loves to run (see Daunte Culpepper etc.) I just don't see why teams keep buying into these QBs. Yes, Micahel Vick is able to thrive with this, although he isn't very big, but he has elite speed. Michael Vick is ridiculously fast, that's what sets him apart. Cam Newton isn't doing anything for me as a football player, and I'm not liking his mental side either so far. While yes he handled the controversy at Auburn pretty well, throw 35 million in guaranteed money and celebrity status he has/ will achieve, and we'll see how he does.

Adrian Puts His Trucker Hat On

Yes. I know. The Vikings lost today. Tripping on Dugan? Give me a break. Watching the Vikings lose a game that they should have won was not enjoyable. However, watching Adrian Peterson absolutely destroy William Gay was enjoyable.

Chad Ochocinco Is A Class Act

Say what you want about the guy, but behind all the hoopla and antics, I believe he has a plan. What NFL player garners as much attention as #85? Especially for a team such as the Bengals, although their fortunes seem to have turned this year. He also seems to go out of his way to help fans/give fans the entertainment we pay them for. These athletes get payed millions of dollars to play a game, so for my money I want to see the most ridiculous show possible! Ochocinco provides that as best he can, and I praise him for it. Alas the reason for this post, Chad is partnering with Motorola to buy the 1,200 tickets needed to prevent a blackout and let the game be televised. The situation is fairly sad, thinking you get to see a 4-1 team (should be 5-0) against a team with a very talented offense. So hats off to Chad Ochocinco and keep up the good work.

Get Your Popcorn Ready, Chicago

Rumors are swirling about T.O. possibly being traded to the Chicago Bears. The Bears are in need of a top receiver and Owens could be the weapon that they need. What would the Bills get in return for Owens? Are there other teams that are interested in him? Where do babies come from? These are the questions that remain to be answered.

Boobs' team you should bet on if betting were legal lock of the week

Since I haven't lost a football bet in 3 weeks, well teams I would have bet on if I was in Vegas anyway, I decided to start a lock of the week to make sure I jinx myself and not win another bet for the rest of the year. But if my streak is to continue here are the two teams (1 college, 1 Pro) I like this weekend and why.

COLLEGE LOCK OF THE WEEK
Wyoming (+10) at Air Force (-10)
AIR FORCE.
Why: Air Force's losses this year: at Minnesota (by 7) because of a fluke fumble the Gophers returned for a touchdown, at Navy (in overtime by 3), the same Navy team that had the No. 7 ranked Ohio St on the ropes in Colombus, and No. 12 TCU by 3 points last week. They run the triple option and play in the mountain air. Not good news for a road Wyoming team this week, that frankly, just isn't very good. They have won some close games this year against Florida Atlantic, UNLV, and the powerhouse Weber St. They got blanked by Colorado 24-0.
Bottom Line: On a neutral field Air Force is two touchdowns better. At home they could be 3. Yeah i'll take Air Force and give the points.
Final Score: Air Force 31, Wyoming 10
(Also Considered: West Virginia -20 against Marshall, Colorado St +22 at TCU)

NFL LOCK OF THE WEEK
N.Y. Giants (+3) at New Orleans (-3)
N.Y.Giants.
WHY: I wanted to take the Falcons over Bears, but since I am a huge Falcons fan I decided that would probably come off as bias and no one would believe me anyway. So I'm going to take the game of the week instead. I think the Giants are the best team in the NFC. Going on the road doesn't matter to them, they have been the best road team in the NFL the last two years. When they won the Super Bowl two years ago they did by beating Tampa Bay, Dallas, and Green Bay on the road. Even though I don't like Eli Manning (really you're too good to play with LT in 75 degree weather year-round), he plays better on the road and under pressure. The Giants will run the ball, control the clock, and not turn the ball over. Eli will make plays when he has to. The Giants defensive line will force Brees into uncharacteristic mistakes. And in case you forgot, it's not like the Saints offense has been on fire the last two games against the Bills and Jets.
Bottom Line: The Giants are better and underdogs. They won't give the Saints 14 points from turnovers. I am assuming Eli Manning is healthy and I haven't heard anything to contradict that. The Giants will win AND just in case you get three points. Take the Giants.
Final Score: N.Y.Giants 27, New Orleans 20
(Also Considered: Atlanta-3 against the Bears, Jets -9 against the Bills)

Most Disgusting Game in NFL History?

Imagine a game with 4 turnovers, 16 penalties, a combined 10-33 on 3rd down conversions, no touchdowns, 16 punts, and this impressive line:

Derek Anderson: 2/17, 23 yds, 1 INT

That, my friends is the lowest completion percentage by a quarterback in a win (minimum 15 attempts) since the merger.

Fitting that this game would end 6-3 on a late field goal by Browns backup kicker Billy Cundiff set up by Roscoe Parrish muffing a punt.

It appears to be another expected season of ineptitude for the Cleveland Browns, but Buffalo fans have to be extremely disappointed in their team. They had visions of winning the AFC East while the Patriots still lick their wounds but are now 1-4. Not quite what they had in mind when they brought in quarterback-enthusiast Terrell Owens.

Oh yeah, and one more thing from this game I found:

The Browns' two completions are the fewest for a winning team since the Bengals did it in a 31-21 win over Denver on Oct. 22, 2000. Corey Dillon had 278 of the Bengals' 407 yards rushing. Akili Smith went 2 of 9 for 34 yards and Scott Mitchell missed all five attempts.

AKILI SMITH!

SUNDAYS ARE BACK!

The NFL season is back and it couldn't have come soon enough. I will be spending every Sunday from now until February 7th on the couch watching countless hours of football. I can't think of anything better than that. Enjoy the games today!

Crabtree Wants A Golden Bus Stuffed With Money Or He Is Prepared To Sit

Michael Crabtree is prepared to sit out for the 2009 season? Are you kidding me? Rookies shouldn't be able to holdout for a giant contract. The NFL should use some type of rookie payscale based on their draft position. The rookies haven't proven that they can play well in the NFL and they shouldn't be given ridiculous contracts before they've played a single NFL game.

I hope that Crabtree sits out this year and never comes back. I would like to see his career amount to nothing all because of how greedy he is.

Bring Moss Back!

Football season is right around the corner and I can't wait. The Minnesota Vikings will soon have Brett Favre as their starting quarterback and their team will be in place. But they're missing one thing. Randy Moss. Please Minnesota, bring Moss back.

The Vikings Are Still Trying To Get Into Brett's Wranglers

Brett Favre is still on the radar of the Minnesota Vikings. Vikings president Mark Wilf said that they are still considering Brett Favre. Most people are getting sick and tired of hearing about Favre coming out of retirement again, but I'm kind of excited about the possibility of Brett wearing purple.

Why would I want Brett Favre playing for my Vikings? The first answer is the most obvious. Just think of how much fuel that puts on the fire of the Vikings and Packers rivalry. The Green Bay legend would be playing for their rival. I would shove that in the faces of every stupid Aaron Rodgers loving Packers fan I know.

The second answer would be that the Vikings could have success with a veteran quarterback. Back in the days of Randy Moss, the Vikings had a couple of older quarterbacks come in and have great seasons. Randall Cunningham had a ridiculous season in 1998. Jeff George followed it up with some good numbers the next year. I would feel much better with an aging Brett Favre behind center than the Rosencopter or T-Jack.

As much as I would like to see Favre in Minnesota, it's probably not going to happen. By now he probably wants to fade out of the spotlight for a while. I don't really blame him. I would get tired of Rachel Nichols digging through my garbage, too.

I do know somebody who would like to take that quarterback job, though....

Today's Thumbs Up & High Five Awesomeness Award Winner...

Brian Dawkins, former Eagles defensive back. Long story short, Dan Leone, an Eagles game-day stadium employee complained about the trading of Dawkins on his Facebook page, the wrong person saw it and that resulted in his firing. The status:

"Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver. . .Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"

Okay, the status is pretty ridiculous...but whatever happened to that little freedom of speech thingy? Why would the Philadelphia Eagles care that one employee, who is assumedly a long-time Eagles and Brian Dawkins fan, complain about trading one of the most popular players in Eagles history. Of course that's going to happen, they're idiots to think otherwise...uh oh, sorry Eagles front office, are you gonna shut our blog down too?

Now onto the part where Brian Dawkins shows he's a classy dude. He heard about the story and felt really bad about Mr. Leone's firing and, even though he nothing to do with it directly, Dawkins decided to give him a pair of tickets to the Eagles-Broncos game in Philly. I genuinely love stories like this where athletes go out of their way to show their appreciation to fans. Great work Brian Dawkins, this TUHFAA's for you!

Jay Cutler's Tears Will Freeze in Chicago

In a move that caught everyone by surprise, the Bears sell the house to bring Cutler to Chi-town. The Bears only gave up 2 first-round picks, a 3rd round pick, Kyle Orton, a couple Escalades, and naming rights to Soldier Field. Okay, take out the last two, but still, the Bears must've reallllly wanted Cutler, they gave up a lot. Do they finally have their remarkably sketchy quarterback situation settled? The Bears also signed offensive tackle Orlando Pace today as well, they certainly have had a busy day. Is it enough for them to compete for the NFC North crown? Probably, the Vikings are the favorite but not by much....not with the Rosencopter under center.

Remember When Andre Smith Was Considered The Best Lineman in The Draft?

Yeah, doesn't that seem like a long time ago? This kid was the cream of the crop last fall, but his Sugar Bowl suspension pretty much started the snowball rolling downhill. When the combine started, he wasn't even sure he was going to work out. He even admitted he was out of shape and just began working out again the weekend of the combine. Why would he even admit that? He then said he was going to participate in the combine and then mysteriously didn't appear. At this point, a lot of NFL teams were questioning his work-ethic, fitness, and sanity.

Once he actually showed up, he then posted lackluster numbers and gave awesome interviews:

(Per SI.com) Smith reportedly dressed "inappropriately" to the visits and gave conflicting reasons for why he wouldn't work out. "Several" offensive line coaches tell Pauline that they want Smith removed from their teams' draft boards.

I wonder what he was wearing? Hopefully it was that ugly Ed Hardy crap...man I hate that stuff.

(Per NFL.com) Alabama OL Andre Smith benched 225 lbs. only 19 times at the Crimson Tide Pro Day Wednesday.
Smith's long arms make benching more difficult, but this is certainly fewer reps than expected. Smith's reputation is as a punishing, powerful run blocker. We would've bet on something in the 25-30 range.

pfffft... come on Andre, who CAN'T bench 225 lbs 30 times? Actually, I think I just pulled a muscle typing that last sentence.

Alabama OL Andre Smith was "visibly overweight" at his Pro Day Wednesday, according to Profootballtalk.com.
Terms like "not overly impressive," "rough," and "he bombed" are being used to describe Smith's effort.

Is he trying to lose money? When you dedicate your life to football and are projected as a top 5 pick, you figure it shouldn't be that hard to hit the gym and not make an ass out of yourself at the biggest job interview of your life. Just my two cents.

Popcorn Enthusiast Terrell Owens Cut by Cowboys

In a move that seems surprising right away, but really isn't, the Dallas Cowboys severed their ties with the Terrell Owens sideshow. After laying waste to San Francisco and Philadelphia's respective locker rooms, he brought his act to the one NFL team that will take pretty much anyone...the Dallas Cowboys (Now with more convicted felons than the Cincinnati Bengals!). The Cowboys recent struggles have been magnified by the constant distractions involving Jessica Simpson, tropical vacations, Wade Phillips' unflattering wardrobe choices, scrip clubs, and pretty much everything T.O. does. This is a team that hasn't even won a playoff game since 1996 and they just cut their best offensive player. This looks bad on both parts...the Cowboys need Owens' productivity and still cut him. Of all teams, you'd think Owens could find a way to not piss everyone off in Dallas. Is there anywhere this guy can play without completely imploding the franchise?

So what now? He's obviously going to play somewhere next year; the man's an ass but he can still be a huge offensive benefit to someone out there.

Where does he go?

Minnesota? After losing out on Houshmandzadeh, it would make sense for the Vikings to at least try to bring Owens in. Even if the starting quarterback appears to be the Rosencopter, defenses would still have to respect the Vikings' passing game a lot more which would in turn open up the run game. And with Adrian Peterson, that is a truly scary thing. On the other hand, Brad Childress was T.O.'s offensive coordinator in Philly so he knows firsthand what he would be getting, that could discourage any kind of a deal. Also, Owens himself might not feel comfortable with the quarterback situation in Minny.

Tennessee? The Titans have needed a big-play receiver since...well, forever. They have a stable quarterback situation with aspiring country music sensation Kerry Collins. Along with a solid run-game and defense, this would be a championship caliber team.

New Orleans? Drew Brees slinging to T.O. would just be sick. That team would have potential of being the new "Greatest Show on Turf."

New York Giants? After losing Plaxico to some poor strip club etiquette, the Giants are in need of a replacement. Would they be able to handle the Owens Traveling Circus though? That team pretty much spiraled out of control after Plax pulled a Cheddar Bob.

New England? Brady. Moss. Owens. Really nothing else has to be said. How frustrating would it be to opposing defenses to try and stop that?! The Patriots have come out of nowhere before to sign the marquee player, but I don't know if the entire northeast could support the egos of both Terrell Owens and Randy Moss.

What is apparent is that T.O. will find a new home somewhere. There will always be a team willing to bring in the popcorn man and give him a shot, even though he has never quite meshed with a team and probably never will. The man's career will be defined as having an immense amount of talent, but an ego that always prevented him from getting a ring.

Laveranues Coles and Santana Moss are the Same Person

Now let me preface this by saying this isn't a race thing... I also think that Brian Scalabrine and Matt Bonner are the same person. The same can be said for Mike Tomlin and Omar Epps...as well as Nick Nolte and Gary Busey. Besides, they don't even really look much alike...but don't let that fool you.

They were both born in Florida, both played for Florida colleges (Miami and Florida State), both were drafted by the New York Jets ( a year apart), and neither are really that consistent, but they can both be considered dependable. Coles is listed as 5'11" and Moss is listed as 5'10". Coles has 44 career TDs and Moss has 43. They both played for the Jets at the same time! I'm willing to bet that Vinny Testaverde wasn't even sure which one he was throwing to at times.

Coles had a brief stint with the Washington Redskins for a couple years and then...my favorite part... HE WAS TRADED BACK TO THE JETS FOR SANTANA MOSS!

Moss Coles was just cut by the Jets...even though the Skins just broke the bank (that never happens!) on Albert Haynesworth... here's to hoping that Laveranues and Santana are reunited once more so that Jason Campbell's head explodes.

Why My Favorite Team is My Favorite Team: The Seattle Seahawks

So I figured this would be a good idea for a series posts each of us can make. Explaining why we follow the teams we do and detailing every heartbreaking moment along the way.

People ask me "why the hell do you like the Seahawks? That makes no sense." No, it doesn't really, but I'll try to make some sense of it.

Here's the short answer:

A couple generations back, most of my family resided in Washington state and followed the sports teams pretty heavily (Huskies, Mariners, Seahawks, Sonics, etc.) Well it was my grandfather that got me hooked on the Seabags, and I'm glad that none of the other teams stuck with me because Seattle had arguably the worst sports year of any city this year...that kind of failure would probably have led to me being on suicide watch. My real teams didn't fare much better, but things are looking up.

Things are looking way up today for the Seahawks with T.J. Houshmandzadeh signing a 5-year deal. This is just what we needed, a proven veteran receiver to come in and be an explosive and reliable target for Matt Hasselbeck. We probably won't take a gamble on Crabtree now with the first pick, though it would still be tempting. I would love to see us draft Kenny Britt (Rutgers) or Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland). Our receiving situation was dreadful last year... you know you're in trouble when you're signing Koren Robinson and trading for Keary Colbert.

Now with Houshamizilli and (hopefully) a young talented receiver in the draft, our passing game can get back to the way it was our Super Bowl year. The defense had a dismal year, but I'm confident they can get back into form as well. I just wish our running game was a little more stable. I never was a big fan of signing Julius Jones or T.J. Duckett especially since we would've been just fine with Maurice Morris and Leonard Weaver, but them's the breaks sometimes. MoMo is off to Detroit now and Weaver may very well be out the door as well. Oh well, I would love to see more of Owen "The Runaway Beer Truck" Schmitt anyways.

I didn't start religiously following the Seahawks until the 99-2000 season. Back then we were still in the AFC West and our biggest rivals were the Jokeland Raiders. Around that time, the biggest story with the team was that we had the longest playoff-victory drought of any active team in the NFL. That drought continued through to the year of the infamous "we want the ball and we're gonna score" line. Then came the year we lost to the freaking Rams THREE TIMES IN ONE SEASON!!! I honestly thought I would go my entire life without seeing the Hawks win one stupid playoff game. Then came the magical year of 2005. What a great year...record setting MVP Shaun Alexander had himself a year. We locked up the #1 seed, beat the Redskins, beat the Panthers, and finally got that damn monkey off our back. Oh yeah and we went on to our first Super Bowl only to lose to the refs... I mean the Steelers (DID YOU KNOW JEROME BETTIS IS FROM DETROIT?!?!? ONE FOR THE THUMB!!!!!!11111111111). I could type about how bad that officiating was until I get carpal tunnel, but what's the point?

Outlook for next season:

Best Case Scenario:

All of the key players stay healthy, Hasselbeck and the Hawks passing attack torch defenses and Houshyomamma has another pro bowl year. The defense goes back to their top-10 form and stuff the run while not getting burned for big passing plays. We win the NFC West and march all the way to Miami for Super Bowl XLIV and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 75-3 (yes I will always be bitter about that Super Bowl).

Worst Case Scenario:

Um.. can it get much worse than last year? Wait...Don't answer that...

We get stricken with more injuries, Seneca Wallace has to start again, Houshbag becomes yet another Seahawk WR that never lives up to his expectations.. (See: Burleson, Nate and Branch, Deion). The Cardinals win the NFC West again while sweeping the Seahawks, and the Hawks end up with another top-10 pick...but not the number 1 pick, more like 8, 9, or 10th. Jim Mora Jr. goes off on a "PLAYOFFS?!?!'"-esque rant a la his father.

What Will Probably Happen:

We compete for the crown in the division that we've owned this decade. The Rams and 49ers actually show signs of life while the Cardinals come back down to earth and suddenly the NFC West is one of the more competitive divisions. I'm gonna predict that Seattle wins the division (unbiased!) at 10-6..wins their home playoff game and loses in the 2nd round. Keep in mind this is ridiculously early to be making any kind of plausible prediction but that's what the offseason is all about...making ridiculous predictions that eventually don't come true...and then deleting them later so they can't be used against you.

Order Your Rosenfels Jersey Now

Congratulations to the Minnesota Vikings. Every year you give me hope and then break my heart. I remember the 98 NFC Championship. I remember missing the playoffs because of the Arizona Cardinals. I remember sending the most explosive receiver of our time to Oakland. I remember the Sex Boat Scandal. The Vikings have a history of disappointment but the team has finally started coming together over the last couple seasons. Adrian Peterson is one of the best running backs in the game right now. Jared Allen and the Williams Wall has formed one of the best run-stopping defenses in the league. Bernard Berrian has finally brought the deep ball threat back to Minnesota. Things are finally starting to look up for the Vikes.

The one thing they are lacking that could make them a Super Bowl contender is a quarterback. T-Jack has been less than phenomenal and Gus Frerotte is just too damn old. Who will the Vikings pick up? Luckily for the Vikings there are several veterans available that could push them over the edge. Kurt Warner had an MVP caliber season and took the improbable Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl this year. Will the Vikings pick him up? Nope. Jeff Garcia is a journeyman who has provided veteran leadership for all of the teams he has played for. Will the Vikings pick him up? Of course not. They need someone who can move like a helicopter. They need Sage Rosenfels. Today the Vikings traded a 4th round draft pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for Rosenfels and have given him a two-year deal worth $9 million making him the highest paid backup quarterback in the NFL.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brad Johnson is the Vikings starting quarterback by the end of the season.
